Exploring and Identifying Ragas – A Collaborative Project

Hold on… because this is going to be an extensive/intensive list… by the end (or middle) of which I hope we can create a Wikipedia listing for not only ragas in Rahman’s music, but also a broad range of raga identification for contemporary tamil (and hindi, even telugu) music that uses the palatable sounds that hold universal appeal. I’m going to begin with songs that have truly rattled/inspired me at some point or another, and build from there. Most of these tracks have very little in the sense of the carnatic classical touch, but an enormous scope of indian romanticism. Despite the strong western sounds of certain songs, I still feel distinguishing the raga would be valuable. I discussed my motivations for this venture in detail here.

(As a side note, I realise that the lyrics to some of these tracks may be lacking, however these songs have been selected for their melody… the kind of melodies that more than once provoked my utter attention… and at other times, slowly revealed its brilliance. I find that most often I am not paying attention to lyrics at all. I have grown accustomed to enjoying the composition itself… then of course there are the rare songs such as “Ithuthan Kaathal” from Pudhiya Mugam for which Vairamuthu’s lyrics are divine nectar.)

These first 108 songs below are ones to which I yet do not know the raga, and have been unable to find it through my research. As the discussion evolves and you identify their names, I will note the raga in red ink beside the track so that several people can consider/collaborate and decide if it is correct. As ragas are identified, I will collect them into a seperate blog topic where they will still be available for verification.

I invite with full earnestness for you to take a listen to these songs and identify their ragas, and discuss, if there are discrepancies (which can be very interesting, if not enlightening). To make this easy and enjoyable, I have made efforts to include the audio tracks to the songs in question.

We have set up a gmail spreadsheet document where we are discussing the plausible ragas for these songs, so pls contact me on my gmail: thilakshan at gmail dot com, and we’ll link you to an online  spreadsheet so you can join in.

To begin, which are the dominating Raga/s for these tracks (please verify Ragas marked in red):

1 Venmegam from film “Guru”. Music: A.R.Rahman. Raga: Senchurutti
Ravi: Venmegam from film “Guru” is not senchurutti. It should be Sudha dhanyasi with Abheri (mixed).

2 Kannin Ganthamai from film “Mounam Pesiyathe”. Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja. Raga: Senchurutti

3 Otrai Parvaiyile from an unknown film (possibly Manikkam). Music: Vidyasagar. Raga: Shree
Ravi: Otrai Parvaiyile is rightly classified as Sri Raga. It has the main prayoga of the Raga….PM RGRS. Hence without doubt, it can be classified as Sri Raga.

4 Jag Ja Re Gudiya from film “Omkara”. Music: Vishal Bharadwaj. Raga: Kalyani

5 Hey! Vanjikodi from film “Ponnumani”. Music: Ilaiyaraja. Raga: ???

6 Kanmoodi Thirakumbothu from film “Sachein”. Music: Devi Sri Prasad. Raga: Shree

7 Anandham Anandham from film “Murai Maman”. Music: Vidyasagar. Raga: Madhyamavathi
Ravi: Anandham Anandham – Dhaivatham is used in interlude as anya swara. But still it can be classified as madhyamavathi, as major portion is based on it.
Madhyamavathi : S R2 M1 P N2 S
S N2 P M1 R2 S

8 Nam Nadai Kondu from film “Baba”. Music: A.R.Rahman. Raga: Kalyani
Ravi: can be classified as kalyani but traces of yamuna kalyani is also present.

9 Oh Vandhale from film “Ottam” (Ram Gopal Varma’s “Daud” in tamil). Music: A.R.Rahman. Raga: Nata Bhairavi

10 Uyire Uyire from film “Malaikottai”. Music: Mani Sharma. Raga: ???

11 Kannanai Ninaikamal from film “Nee Venunda Chellam”. Music: Dhina. Raga: ???

12 Manmohiney Morey from film “Yuvvraaj”. Music: A.R.Rahman. Raga: Bimpalas
This song has been cited as Hindolam by some, and Bimpalas by others. Please clarify.
Ravi: You can be sure that this song is Bimplas.

To tell you technically, Abheri and Bimplas are almost same. Bimplas is a hindustani equivalent of Abheri. Both Abheri as well as hindolam has the same parent raga[Nata bhairavi] or in other words they are janyam of Nata bairavi.

Bimplas/Abheri
Aroganaha – S G2 M1 P N2 S
Avarohana – S N2 D2 P M1 G2 R2 S

Hindolam
Aroganaha – S G2 M1 D2 N2 S
Avarohana – S N2 D2 M1 G2 S

Having said the similarities and differences between the two, some novice has interpreted Bimplas as Hindolam by mistake.

But if you notice the swaras portion in the songs, you can very well say that this is Bimplas. For those who cannot find out ragas based on Raga chayal/Bhava, theoritically it can be confirmed as the usage of R2 and D2 are there in the swara portion.

13 Minnal Kuthadum from film “Polladhavan”. Music: G.V.Prakash. Raga: Shree / Karaharapriya

14 Kopama from film “Varsham.” Music: Devi Sri Prasad. Raga: Shuddha Dhanyasi
Ravi: kopama – Sudha dhanyasi

15 Porkalam from film “Thenali”. Music: A.R.Rahman. Raga: Pallavi: Shuddha Dhanyasi, Charanam: Abheri/Karaharapriya.

16 Tanhayee from film “Dil Chahta Hai”. Music: Shankar Eeshan Loy. Raga: Pallavi: Vakulabharanam, Charanam: Charukesi.
Ravi: Yes as you said the pallavi starts with Vakulabaranam. It deviates at the point Har kushi in the pallavi. Charanam may be classified as charukesi. But note this is no pure composition. Just for sake of classifying you may classify.

17 Kodana Kodi from film “Saroja”. Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja. Raga: Bhairavi with traces of Shubapantuvarali

18 Mudhalvanae from film “Mudhalvan”. Music: A.R.Rahman. Raga: Pallavi: Shuddha Dhanyasi with traces of Kalyani, Charanam: Madhyamavathi

19 Veerapandi Kotaiyile from film “Thiruda Thiruda”. Music. A.R.Rahman. Raga: Nata Bhairavi & Hari Kambodhi mix

20 Masakali from film “Delhi 6”. Music: A.R.Rahman. Raga: Chala Nattai with R2 Swaras

21 Thoda Thoda from film “Indira”. Music: A.R.Rahman. Raga: Shankarabharanam.
Ravi: You can be sure about this.

22 Majaa Majaa from film “Sillunnu Oru Kadhal”. Music: A.R.Rahman. Raga: ???

23 Kana Kandenadi from film “Parthiban Kanavu”. Music: Vidyasagar. Raga: Shuddha Dhanyasi.
There’s arguements about if this is Abheri or Shuddha Dhanyasi?
Ravi: Kana kandenadi from the movie parthiban kanavu is sudha dhanyasi. The music director, for some reason used the swars R2 and D2 in the Sax portion both in the beginning as well as the interlude, which makes it Abheri. But the whole song is pure sudha dhanyasi except the sax portion which is set in Abheri.

24 Main Shayar To Nahin from film “Bobby”. Music: Laxmikant Pyarelal. Raga: Pallavi: Nata Bhairavi, Charanam: Keeravani

25 Ada Machamulla from film “Chinna Veedu”. Music: Ilaiyaraja. Raga: Shuddha Dhanyasi

26 Senthoora Poove from film “16 Vayathinile”. Music: Illaiyaraja.  Raga: Gowri Manohari / Karaharapriya
There is a disagreement on this song, the book RagaChintamani cites this song as Madhyamavathi raga. TFM Forum discussions allude that this song is Gowri Manohari with Ni3 usage. What do you think?

27 Badan Pe Sitare from film “Prince”. Music: Shankar-Jaikishen. Raga: Pallavi: Madhyamavathi / Charanam: Shuddha Dhanyasi

28 Saalai Ooram from film “Payanangal Mudivathilai”. Music: Ilaiyaraja. Raga: Shuddha Dhanyasi
Ravi: salaioram has been tagged as sudha dhanyasi. But it has no relation to it.

When I analysed the song, it is based on mohanam/shankarabharanam.

To Start with,

Mohanam:
Arogana :S R2 G3 P D2 S
Avarhoana : S D2 P G3 R2 S

Shankarabharanam :
Arogana:S R2 G3 M1 P D2 N3 S
Avarohana:S N3 D2 P M1 G3 R2 S

If you look at the notations of the pallavi

S R G R S R G R S D R S D P
Salaioram solaiondru vaadum sangeetham paadum

This seems to resemble mohanam. Even the swaras denote that.

But to tell you the truth, just like all squares are rectangles but the converse is not true.

Hence this can be taken up as a rare prayoga of shankarabharanam.

However, Prathimadhyama is used as an anya swara in Charanams.

29 En Manam from “Paarvaigal” – not much info I know about the context of this song except that it was composed for a tele-serial. But it’s quite unique, and simply electric. Raga: Abheri

30 Thirumana Malargal from film “Poovellum Un Vasam”. Music: Vidyasagar.
Ravi: This is again based on Abheri/Bimplas. Say again this can be classified as Abheri as most of the portion in the song revolves around abheri.

31 Meenamma from film “Aasai”. Music: Deva.

32 Adikuthu Kuliru from film “Mannan”. Music: Ilaiyaraja.

33 Khamoshiyan from film “One 2 Ka 4”. Music: A.R.Rahman.

34 Sooriyanum Santhiranum from film “Sivaji – The Boss”. Music: A.R.Rahman.

35 Ithuthan Kadhal Enbadha from film “Pudhiya Mugam”. Music: A.R.Rahman.

36 Sahana Saaral Thoovutho from film “Sivaji – The Boss.” Music: A.R.Rahman.

37 Poga Poga from film “Pattiyal”. Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja.

38 Oodiva Kathalae from film “AIBI”. Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja.

39 Nenjam Ellam from film “Aiyuthu Ezhuthu”. Music: A.R.Rahman.

40 Yedho Ninaikiren from film “Thalainagaram”. Music: D. Immam.

Ravi: Vellai pookal is wonderful composition on hamsadhvani. Wow what a conposition and thanks to Rahman sir for that. It brings peace to my mind. I feel like I am flying in Air.

51 Enna Soli Paduvatho from film “En Mana Vaanil”. Music: Ilaiyaraja.
Ilaiyaragam cites this song as Shuddha Dhanyasi, and the book RagaChintamani cites this song as Shuddha Saveri. Thoughts?

Ravi: Enna Soli Paduvatho from film “En Mana Vaanil” is undoubtedly sudha dhanyasi. I think the author of the book was in a trans and made a typo. Each and every line in the song re-confirms it is sudha dhanyasi, leaving no doubt. And any person having Raga knowledge, would say, there are lot of differences between sudha dhanyasi and sudha saveri and no composer would mend these two. Raja sir would never do that.

Sudha saveri – S R2 M1 P D2 S / S D2 P M1 R2 S
Sudha dhanyasi- S G2 M1 P N2 S/S N2 P M1 G2 S

You can be sure it is sudha dhanyasi. If possible write to the author of that book about this mistake commited by him.

52 New York Nagaram from film “Sillunnu Oru Kadhal”. Music: A.R.Rahman.

53 Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera from film “Swades”. Music: A.R.Rahman.

96 Enna Solla Pohirai from film “Kandukonden Kandukonden”. Music: A.R.Rahman.
Three varying response for this one also. Some say it’s Bhairavi, others that it’s Misra Kirwani, and others that it is Gowri Manohari… what raga is this track?

Song was later adapted for the tamil film “Kadhal Sadugudu”.

98 Yeh Rishta from film “Meenaxi”. Music: A.R.Rahman.

  1. Hello VajraKrishna,

I just saw your comment on my blog… I will go through the list, and try to help in any way possible..Glad you stumbled on my blog and have given me a chance to participate in this effort.

    Thanks,
    Arun

  2. #8 – Should this not be Kalyani? If I am wrong, please tell me where the ReethiGoulai section starts…

  3. Hi,

I wanted to discuss with you in more detail about your observations with the 108 songs.. do you use any messengers? Gmail?

My gmail acc is: thilakshan at gmail dot com
msn is thilakshan at msn dot com

Gmail would be better as we have started a spreadsheet where we are discussing and arguing over the 108 songs.. and we could add you in to the list. Send me a mail.

    Cheers,
    Thilakshan.

  4. Hi Vajra,

Thanks for sharing the spreadsheet to me as requested. I will update whateveer I know. One thing you have to keep in mind is that not all film songs can be classified as based on a Raga. Infact most of the songs you have in mind are not based on raga itself. Some of the songs can be classified as based on the scale of the raga. Meaning the song will not have the classical attributes of the raga, but may be based on the notes of the raga.

    Regards
    Ramesh

  5. Hi Ramesh,

Yes, this is true – however as the Author of Raga Chintamani explained, I have also experienced that since the film songs often use a very simplified nuance of the raga, despite that it does not encompass the raga’s full capabilities, the simplicity of demonstrating it enables people to identify with it far more quickly – particularly those who are new to understanding ragas.

  6. HI VAJRA, GOT UR MSG. GREAT DREAM. WILL JOIN SHORTLY. ALL THE BEST.

  7. Hello Vajra Krishna,

Vinith here. I have fwded ur post to a fellow blogger. He’ll help you out i believ. 🙂

    All the best!

  8. First of all thanks for starting such a blog. You are doing a wonderful job. Please feel free to ask any help from me.

Please find my humble comments below.

51 Enna Soli Paduvatho from film “En Mana Vaanil” is undoubtedly sudha dhanyasi. I think the author of the book was in a trans and made a typo. Each and every line in the song re-confirms it is sudha dhanyasi, leaving no doubt. Sudha dhanyasi- S G2 M1 P N2 S/S N2 P M1 G2 S

#50 – Vellai pookal is wonderful composition on hamsadhvani. Wow what a conposition and thanks to Rahman sir for that. It brings peace to my mind. I feel like I am flying in Air.

Have lot of comments, please drop a test mail to my id. Will subsequently mail you.

  11. Hi, Ravi, it is wonderful that you got in contact with me! For my project to work I definitely need the help of people who are knowledgeable about ragas, and you could say I have been waiting for someone just like you to help me take this project forward. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

I have sent you an invite to gtalk. When you have time to spare we can discuss the project further. What I really want to do is acquaint people who are otherwise unaware of the power of raga by creating awareness of raga in popular music. When I showed many such people the data that I had already collected, they were amazed at how they were suddenly able to recognize raga, even if only as a preliminary step!

I believe this project can be very fruitive. Speak to you soon, and thanks again.

  12. Thanks for replying. Please find my few more comments below.

    1) Venmegam from film “Guru”. is not senchurutti. It should be Sudha dhanyasi with Abheri (mixed).

    2) Kana kandenadi from the movie parthiban kanavu is sudha dhanyasi. The music director, for some reason used the swars R2 and D2 in the Sax portion both in the beginning as well as the interlude, which makes it Abheri. But the whole song is pure sudha dhanyasi except the sax portion which is set in Abheri.

  13. Few more,

1)Nam Nadai Kondu from film “Baba”. Music: A.R.Rahman – can be classified as kalyani but traces of yamuna kalyani is also present.

    2) Manmohiney Morey from film “Yuvvraaj”. Music: A.R.Rahman. Raga: Bimpalas.

  14. 1)Anandham Anandham – Dhaivatham is used in interlude as anya swara. But still it can be classified as madhyamavathi, as major portion is based on it.
    Madhyamavathi : S R2 M1 P N2 S

    2)kopama – Sudha dhanyasi

3)salaioram has been tagged as sudha dhanyasi. But it has no relation to it.

    4) Rasave unna nambi from the movie muthal mariyathai can be classified as Shankarabharanam.

  15. 1)Meenamma from the movie rajathi raja is set in the raga sarasangi.
One more compositions on same Raga:
    1) Maharajanodu from the movie sathi leelavathi

    2) Otrai Parvaiyile is rightly classified as Sri Raga. It has the main prayoga of the Raga….PM RGRS. Hence without doubt, it can be classified as Sri Raga.

    3) Oh Saathi Re seems to be tilang. Usage of R3 and N3 some times appear as nattai. But anyway the composition is awesome.

  16. If you are really interested in identifying some of the mysteries of Ilayaraja’s classical compositions please read this post in my blog.
